What is Stewardship?

At Trinity Church, Stewardship is a committee of Church members that serves the Congregation to encourage Generosity and Charity. We do this by first teaching that members should invest their Time, Talent, and Treasures in the Church. Because, if a Christian can first be Charitable and Generous within the Church that serves him/her, then that Christian can go out into the world with that same spirit. We believe this is the right thing to do and the Word of God teaches us to do this for our growth as Good People. All humankind is the beneficiary of a wonderful earthly treasure. But God has given even more generously to his people:

“We all live off his generous bounty, gift after gift after gift…. This exuberant giving and receiving, this endless knowing and understanding – all this came through Jesus, the Messiah.” (John 1:16-17 MSG)

We must remember from whom all our blessing flow. God reminds us that all that we have is not our own, because what we have comes from and belongs to God:

“To the LORD your God belong the heavens, even the highest heavens, the earth and everything in it.” (Deuteronomy 10:14 NIV)

A Steward is a person who manages another's property, financial, or other affairs; one who administers a thing as the agent of another or others. In the case of Christians, we care for and look after God's property until Jesus Christ returns. We do this because we are the Body of Christ acting in the world and we are entrusted to the management of the Church and the care of his property. This is taught by Matthew 25:14-30, and is well summarized by the following verse:

“Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them.” (Matthew 25:14 NIV)

And so, Stewardship is not just a committee of people but also the commitment made by all Christians. A commitment made to care for what is Gods. We Christians do this by being Generous and Charitable with our Time, Talents, and Treasures doing good first for our Church and then taking that spirit out into the world. This is a worshipful act as a response to all that God has given to us.

The Thankful Samaritan

One day, when Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem, he came upon 10 lepers. The lepers called out to him and asked for mercy. Jesus had them seek out priests to be cleansed and they did. They discovered after their cleansing that they had been healed. One of the men who had been healed, a Samaritan, came back praising God. That man threw himself at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. Jesus then asked on the whereabouts of the other nine men. Likely being a rhetorical question there was no answer. Jesus gave the man his leave and told him that his faith had made him well. ~ paraphrase from Luke 17: 11-17.

The Sermon on the Amount

This is the message Dr. Tom Smith gave to us at our annual Stewardship Celebration dinner on November 8, 2008. He has graciously shared it with us in written form. We hope you'll find it enlightening.

Over the course of many years I have become incredibly comfortable talking with church people about money. That is actually pretty odd for a Presbyterian minister. Over that time I came upon an understanding of money in the Christian life that I will share with you this evening. That understanding can be put simply. It is in the need of the giver to give for his or her own spiritual growth, not give for the need of the church budget.
